CHARTS: BRITISH ADMIRALTY: ARCS LEGAL STATUS
ARCS Charts are official digital facsimiles of the Admiralty chart are thus carry the same guarantee of quality and accuracy. If you are obliged to comply with the SOLAS regulations, note that the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has approved the use of Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) in the Raster Chart Display System (RCDS) mode of operation when official Raster Navigational Charts (RNCs) which meet IHO standards, such as those provided by the ARCS service, are displayed.
This approval is subject to two conditions: RNCs can only be used in the absence of official vector Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs) and, when operating in the RCDS mode, ECDIS must be used together with an appropriate folio of up-to-date paper charts.
